Movie Soundtrack for Tao Te Ching
1. No Church in the Wild by: Jay-Z and Kanye West

No Church in the Wild is a perfect interpretation of how Lao Tzu feels about government as a whole. Lao Tzu feels as though the government is nothing but trouble in China which is why he chose to leave in the first place. Lao Tzu viewed more of a government based around freedom of choice to better run a country. This anger towards government power is shown is his writing such as this “The Master doesn't try to be powerful;
thus he is truly powerful.
The ordinary man keeps reaching for power;
thus he never has enough.
The Master does nothing,
yet he leaves nothing undone.
The ordinary man is always doing things,
yet many more are left to be done”.
2. Freedom by: Anthony Hamilton and Elayna Boynton

Freedom is a song about trying to escape the government and giving everything you have to do it. This is the same situation Lao Tzu was in while trying to escape until he ran into the gate keeper. He gave his own words of wisdom to the guard in order to escape the area and have more freedoms himself. This was Lao Tzu’s motivation to writing the Tao Te Ching.
3. Simple Man by: Lynyrd Skynyrd
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMmTkKz60W8
Simple Man is a song about the short facts of wisdom a mans mother taught him as a young child. The tie in with the Tao Te ching is the wisdom that people learn from short sayings such as from Lao Tzu and from their own mother. The sayings from the Tao Te ching were meant to better your own life overall not to just be remembered.
4. The Yoda Song by: Weird Al
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0QY96fwTlE
The Yoda song shows the connection to the Star Wars character Yoda and the sayings of Lao Tzu’s work. The connection between the two is great with meanings that take time to think about. Both Lao Tzu and Yoda are seen as old and wise for their culture or movie.
5. Swimming Pools by: Kendrick Lamar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-ejyHzz3XE
This song by Kendrick Lamar is about not giving into peer pressure of others and following your own path. Lao Tzu followed these guidelines exactly he felt as though people who followed others lead to catastrophe. His reasoning was that grouping leads to power and control within government which he seen as only bringing violence. Both Kendrick and Lao Tzu viewed following your own opinion as a more positive effect on the world around us.
